In 1954, the year the first recording on this collection was made, Miles Davis was beginning to win his battle to rid himself of the addiction to heroin that could have consigned him to the 'what might have been' category; he went on instead to become perhaps the most influencial jazz musician since Louis Armstrong. His association with Charlie Parker in the years around the turn of the decade had given him a grounding in the more musical ways of the bop era, and although he had recorded with musicians of the calibre of Horace Silver and Art Blakey during the the early years of the 1950's, he was not performing regularly. This situation changed dramatically in the next few years. The middle years of the 1950's were when Davis's prodigious talent for innovation began to manifest itself in earnest.
